After a hair transplant: a realistic timeline of what happens

The first week

Small crusts around each implanted follicle and redness in both donor and recipient areas. This is entirely normal.

Sleeping with the head elevated and avoiding any friction on the transplanted area matters particularly in this period, because the follicles have not yet anchored.

Hair washing follows the method and timing the team specifies, not before. Improvising here can cost you follicles.

From week two to month two

This is the stage that worries most patients: the transplanted hair falls out. It looks as though the procedure failed and everything is lost.

In reality only the visible hair shaft is shed, while the follicle itself remains in place, having entered a temporary resting phase. This is an expected stage, not a complication.

Knowing this in advance saves a patient considerable anxiety and unnecessary appointments.

From month three to six

Follicles begin producing new hair, but it is initially fine, light and short. Density at this stage does not reflect the final result at all.

Growth does not happen at the same rate across all areas, so you may notice differences between one side and the other. This is common and usually evens out with time.

From month six to one year

Hair thickens, takes on its natural colour, and density improves gradually. Most of the result becomes clear in this period.

A fair final assessment is usually at around one year, and can take longer in some areas. Judging the result before then is unfair to both patient and surgeon.

The point many people miss

A transplant moves hair resistant to loss into a thinning area. It does not stop loss in your original, non-transplanted hair.

Anyone who does not continue with treatment protecting their existing hair may find themselves years later with new gaps around the transplanted area, making the result look inconsistent.

This is why the post-transplant plan is part of the procedure itself, not an optional addition afterwards.
