Dental implant or bridge? A practical comparison before you decide

The fundamental difference isn't the price, it's the cost paid by the neighbouring teeth.

What each option replaces

An implant replaces the tooth root. A post is placed in the bone to serve as the root, and a crown is fitted onto it. A bridge replaces only the crown, relying on the neighbouring teeth as two supports carrying the missing tooth between them.

That technical difference leads to a long-term difference in the health of the whole mouth.

The question of bone

Jawbone needs loading to maintain its density, exactly like other bone. When a tooth is lost, loading stops in that area and the bone begins to resorb gradually.

An implant restores that loading and preserves the bone. A bridge does not, and over the years recession can appear beneath it, showing as a dark gap between the gum and the restoration.

This point specifically is what makes implants the medically preferred option where the case allows, regardless of the initial difference in cost.

The cost to neighbouring teeth

A bridge requires trimming the adjacent teeth to serve as supports. If those teeth are entirely healthy, you are sacrificing sound tissue that cannot be replaced.

If one of them already needs a crown because of a large filling or previous root canal treatment, a bridge becomes a logical option, since you are not sacrificing anything additional.

When a bridge is the better choice

When bone density does not allow an implant and the patient does not want a bone graft.

When a health condition makes surgery unsuitable, or heavy smoking substantially raises the chance of failed integration.

When a faster solution is needed, since a bridge is completed within weeks while an implant requires a longer period of osseointegration.

The question that settles it

Ask your dentist: what is the condition of the teeth either side of the gap? The answer decides more than any general comparison, because it determines whether a bridge costs you healthy tissue or not.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an implant last?

Many years with good care, regular review and healthy gums. No guaranteed figure can be given to any patient.

Is implant placement painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic, and many patients describe it as less uncomfortable than having a tooth out.

Does diabetes rule out implants?

Not necessarily, but controlling blood sugar beforehand is essential for successful osseointegration.
