Botox or filler? The difference that changes your decision

Two entirely different substances

Botox and filler are mentioned together so often that many people assume they are two versions of the same thing. In reality they work by completely different mechanisms, and each treats a problem the other does not.

Botox relaxes muscle. When the muscle that pulls the skin with every expression is relaxed, wrinkles caused by movement soften. Filler, by contrast, fills a space: it replaces lost volume or supports an area that has descended.

How to tell which you need

There is a simple test doctors use: look in the mirror with your face completely still. If the line disappears, it is a dynamic line and botox is the answer. If the line stays visible with the face at rest, it is a static line caused by volume loss, and filler is the answer.

Lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes are usually dynamic. The line running from the nose to the corner of the mouth, and descent of the cheek, are usually a matter of volume. Many faces need both in different areas, which is entirely normal.

Why some results look artificial

An artificial result is rarely the fault of the product. It is usually an error of quantity, placement, or reading the face.

The face is a single unit. Filling the lips without considering how they relate to the chin and jaw produces an unbalanced look, even if the lip itself is attractive. This is why an experienced doctor starts by analysing proportions before picking up the needle.

Building gradually matters. Working over two or three sessions in measured amounts gives a more natural result than trying to achieve everything at once.

What to ask before being injected

Ask about the product, its brand name, and whether it is approved by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. This is an entirely legitimate question and it is your right to ask it.

Ask about the qualifications of whoever will inject you. Cosmetic injection is a medical practice requiring precise anatomical knowledge of the vessels and nerves of the face, not simply manual skill.

Ask what the plan is if a complication occurs. A clear, ready answer is a sign of an organised practice.
